Brett Moffitt has some big shoes to fill in 2011 and his results so far show those shoes fit nicely.
In his April 2 debut with Michael Waltrip Racing, Moffitt not only dominated the 2011 K&N Pro Series East season-opening race at Greenville-Pickens Speedway, but he was nearly perfect.
“That was an amazing win,” Moffitt said. “Luckily we were able to put it on the pole – I was very excited about that – and then after that being able to lead green-to-checker is just awesome. Starting the season like that is amazing, and hopefully we never look back.”
MWR hired Moffitt in December after it moved 2009 and 2010 East Champion Ryan Truex to the Nationwide Series. The team deemed Moffitt – who finished second to Truex in 2010 - the best driver to help it win a third consecutive series title.
The 18-year-old Grimes, Iowa native knows the pressure and relishes the opportunity.
“Hopefully I can get a chance to run for my first and their third championship this season,” said Moffitt who won East races at Martinsville and Dover in 2010. “This is a heck of an opportunity. I’m honored they chose me to contend for another championship. I plan to show them they made the right decision.”
Michael Waltrip has no doubts.
“Ryan Truex gave Michael Waltrip Racing its first and second championships so he’ll always be my hero,” said Waltrip. “But we have a lot of faith in Brett. We saw what he did the last two years on the track and we are confident he’ll do well with us. I think MWR fans and NASCAR fans are really going to like him. His race at Greenville Pickens was awesome and exactly what we hoped for when we signed him.”
Moffitt has even impressed his veteran crew chief who tutored many drivers over the years.
“This kid’s the real deal,” said Mike Greci who won titles with Truex in 2009 and 2010 and with Mike Stefanik in 1997 and 1998. “He’s got the off track personality and the on-track skills that could make him a huge success in this sport some day.”
Moffitt is a future star of NASCAR but he already boasts an impressive racing resume.
He started racing at age 11 and after three years in karts he became the youngest race winner at Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway winning the 2007 edition of the Harris Clash. He finished second in the 2008 ASA Late Model North Series winning five races and Rookie of the Year honors.
Moffitt made his NASCAR debut in 2009 winning the pole in his first East race at Greenville-Pickens Speedway for Andy Santerre Motorsports. He finished third in the standings winning a race at Dover and South Boston and two poles before moving to Joe Gibbs Racing in 2010.
In 2011, Moffitt raised the trophy in victory lane to kickoff the season and expects to do that several more times as well as win MWR its third championship. Certainly that’s a tall task, but filling big shoes doesn’t seem to be a problem for him so far.
