Martin Truex Jr. Race Summary: No. 56 NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota driver Martin Truex Jr. finished eighth in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Talladega Superspeedway. The Michael Waltrip Racing driver lined up fourth after rain washed out qualifying and NASCAR set the field based on Friday practice speeds. Truex raced up front during the opening laps but dropped back to about 15th. At halfway, Truex drove into the top 10 and remained in the lead drafting group until the final pit stop on lap 163. In the closing laps Truex stayed in line with the leaders and avoided the last lap wreck to cross the finish line eighth. The NAPA team returns to action Sunday at Martinsville Speedway.
• Started fourth and finished eighth
• Raced as high as third and as low as 27th
• Raced in the lead pack for most of the race
• Raced single file and out of trouble to capture his 13th top-10 finish of the season
TRUEX: "This by far has been the best restrictor-plate race I've run this year. We made the right decisions all day and I am so happy to be able to drive my NAPA Toyota back to the garage in one piece. It was a good day for us!"
Clint Bowyer Race Summary: No. 15 5-hour ENERGY Toyota Camry driver Clint Bowyer finished 10th in Sunday’s 500-mile NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Talladega Superspeedway. The Michael Waltrip Racing driver started 20th after rain cancelled qualifying on Saturday. The No. 15 Toyota immediately dropped to the back of the field to avoid any potential early race wrecks. Bowyer raced his way through the field and into the lead by halfway to collect a bonus point. Bowyer raced the No. 15 into the top-five on several occasions during the second half of the race, but would fall back to regroup if he found himself surrounded by cars that could trigger a multi-car accident. In the closing laps, Bowyer raced in 23rd waiting for the usual Talladega “Big One” that never came. With less than five laps remaining Bowyer raced to make up as much ground and he could as the pack ran single file. A last lap wreck involving three cars moved Bowyer from 14th to 10th as the race ended under caution. Bowyer is eighth of 13 drivers and trails point leader Jimmie Johnson by 57 points after the sixth of 10 races in NASCAR’s 2013 Chase for the Sprint Cup. Bowyer and the 5-hour ENERGY team returns to action Sunday at Martinsville Speedway.
• Started 20th and finished 10th
• Dropped to the back for the first half of the race.
• Worked his way to the front and led lap 94 to collect a bonus point.
• Dropped back to 23rd with less than 20 laps to go hoping to miss the “big one” which never came.
• Raced from 14th to 10th on the last lap
• Ranked eighth in championship points trailing leader Jimmie Johnson by 57 points with four races remaining
BOWYER: “We had a fast 5-hour ENERGY Toyota all weekend. We did our best to stay out of trouble and be as patient as we could, but in the end it just didn’t work out like we thought it would. We led some laps and I thought for sure we would get a late caution, but everyone behaved themselves and it took us a bit by surprise. It wasn’t what we wanted for the day, but our car is in one piece, I’m in one piece and we can move on to Martinsville.”
Michael Waltrip Summary: No. 55 Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota driver Michael Waltrip finished 32nd in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway. The Michael Waltrip Racing driver started 22nd after rain cancelled qualifying on Saturday. Waltrip immediately dropped to 39th to avoid any potential early wrecks. However, about 60 laps into the race, Waltrip worked his way up to 10th with the help of his teammate Clint Bowyer to see what he had for the end of the race. After proving he had the car to compete for the win, Waltrip dropped back to 30th. Unfortunately, Waltrip fell too far back, lost the draft and lost a lap to the leaders on lap 165. The 50-year-old driver never regained the lap and crossed the finish line 32nd. The No. 55 Aaron’s Dream Machine team will be back in action with Elliott Sadler behind the wheel on Sunday at Martinsville Speedway.
• Started 22nd and finished 32nd
• Dropped to the back to avoid any early race wrecks
• Raced up to 10th before dropping back
• Went a lap down to the leaders on lap 165
WALTRIP: “We just didn’t have anything for them today. About 60 laps into the race I thought our car was pretty good when we were able to work our way into the top 10. However, I dropped back and lost the draft for some reason and lost a lap. I tried to race for the Lucky Dog free pass but a caution never came out. After the race we realized we had something wrong with the grill that messed us up. I just can’t thank Aaron’s enough for supporting MWR.”
• Jamie McMurray edged Dale Earnhardt Jr. as the race ended under caution.
• Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Paul Menard and Kyle Busch rounded out the top five.
• Three cautions slowed the race for 10 laps.
• The race lasted two hours and 47 minutes.
• Race featured 52 lead changes among 20 drivers
